Spring is one of our favourite seasons at the Music School! A big thank you to Gordon who lovingly takes care of all our flowerbeds. He does such a great job, and always makes sure we look our very best!
Anna (on the right) began her musical adventures at VCMS in 2007 by taking a Piano Pathways class. Soon after this she began piano lessons with Karen Rempel, followed by violin lessons with Bev Martens the next year. Her love of playing music with others started early on – playing duets with her sister Simone, then joining the Carriage House Orchestra. Throughout the years, she has played with countless groups of musicians, from string orchestras to quartets to busking at the market, playing everything from Bach to Piazolla to the Beatles. She has now played in the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra for eight years, and for the past two years has held the position of co-concertmaster. She has participated in many music festivals throughout the Okanagan as well as being invited to participate in several Provincial Music Festivals. Other musical highlights include participating in the Suzuki Valhalla Summer Institute for 8 summers, taking 2 week-long songwriting intensives, and releasing a 3 song album with her band Roots & Strings. Playing music at church, youth group, school and various community events, Anna has enjoyed collaborating with a wide variety of musicians in a range of genres. She has had the privilege of teaching violin under the guidance of Bev Martens and has enjoyed working with younger students in group classes. Closely connected to her love of music, Anna has had a long involvement with dance and rhythmic gymnastics. When Rachel Martens created her Carriage House Performance Troupe, Anna and her sister both enthusiastically jumped into this opportunity. This was a place she could combine her love of music, theatre, dance and creating story. This year Anna has been working towards her level 10 Royal Conservatory of Music exams in both violin and piano, to be taken this spring. She plans to pursue post-secondary education, as well as continue to collaborate and create music. We will miss you Anna, when you carry on with your next adventures. Your smile lights up the room, and we look forward to hearing about University life. Enjoy every moment!
